How Do Umpires Keep Track of Balls and Strikes?

Umpires can sometimes lose the count and number of outs, but there is an easy solution to avoid this.

Umpires use a tool called an indicator, also known to non-umpires as a CLICKER. As an umpire, you have a lot of responsibilities, but the number one responsibility of the plate umpire is balls and strikes and how many outs there are in an inning.

So Many Choices, What Style To Choose.

There are different types and styles of indicators, but they all serve the same purpose of helping the umpire keep track of the count. Some are made out of metal, while others are made of plastic. Some have three dials: one for balls, one for strikes, and one to keep track of the outs, while some have a fourth dial that shows the innings. They all do the same thing: keep track of balls, strikes, and outs. It is a personal choice of what indicator you choose, but choose one and use one. It makes it easier to keep the count.

Whose responsibility is it to keep track of the count during the game?

It’s a simple answer. Some people think it is the scoreboard operator’s responsibility, but they are wrong. The scoreboard operator should know the count, but it is the ultimate responsibility of the umpires on the field. All umpires on the field should know the count at all times.

Is An Umpire Required To Carry an Indicator?

As we all know, crazy situations can happen, like a passed ball and a runner attempts to score or an overthrown ball on a stolen base, and we forget what the previous count was. If this happens, you can’t rely on the scoreboard because it may need to be corrected. Take pride in your game and strive to keep a perfect count the entire game. Use an indicator. You will be able to focus on the rest of your responsibilities when you are sure that you know the correct count and not guessing at it.

While the rules may not require it, it is highly recommended for umpires to carry an indicator. Tracking balls, strikes, and outs can be challenging, and an indicator is a simple and effective tool to help keep track of the count. Indicators are an inexpensive tool everyone should use and carry in their equipment bag.

Why Do Umpires Hold An Indicator In The Left Hand?

Indicators are designed and molded to be held in the umpire’s left hand, making it easy to turn the dials. It does take a little practice to get used to using it smoothly and holding on to it since we remove our masks with our left hand. But with practice, you will feel more comfortable and soon you won’t even be thinking twice about it.

Keep the right hand empty. The right hand is for calling strikes and outs.

PRO TIP

Notch your indicator. I take a small file or Dremmel tool kit and notch a small area next to one of the numbers. This way, I can tell the count without looking at the indicator as often. You look much more professional on the field if you’re not always staring down at your indicator and can keep your eyes on the playing field where the action is.
