Some are made out of metal, while others are made of plastic. Some have three dials: one for balls, one for strikes, and one to keep track of the outs, while some have a fourth dial that shows the innings. They all do the same thing: keep track of balls, strikes, and outs. It is a personal choice of what indicator you choose, but choose one and use one. It makes it easier to keep the count. Indicators are designed and molded to be held in the umpire's left hand, making it easy to turn the dials. It does take a little practice to get used to using it smoothly and holding on to it since we remove our masks with our left hand. But with practice, you will feel more comfortable and soon you won't even be thinking twice about it. Keep the right hand empty. The right hand is for calling strikes and outs. PRO TIP Notch your indicator. I take a small file or Dremmel tool kit and notch a small area next to one of the numbers. This way, I can tell the count without looking at the indicator as often. You look much more professional on the field if you're not always staring down at your indicator and can keep your eyes on the playing field where the action is.
