To become a baseball umpire in Wyoming, you must follow specific steps to get started. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know:
Registration:
Register with the Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA), along with the Wyoming Sports Officials Association (WSOA), which oversees sports officials baseball. You can register online by visiting WHSAA.org or the Wyoming Arbiter Sports page.
Local Association:
By joining local associations created in cooperation with the WSOA, they can help advance your career, provide training and rules assistance, and help new members with game assignments.
Certifications Requirements:
Certified: Umpires must meet the following criteria:
- Be a registered official for a minimum of two years
- Receive a favorable grade from the observation committee
- Attend a mechanics camp within 12 months of applying for certification
- Pass the NFHS exam (closed book)
Certified officials are eligible to officiate post-season tournament games. To maintain certification, officials must pass the closed-book NFHS exam and attend a mechanics camp every five years.
Registered: Umpires must complete the following steps:
- Pass the NFHS rules exam (open book)
- Attend a WHSAA rules clinic
Registered officials are permitted to officiate varsity games.
Non-varsity: Requires umpire to attend a WHSAA rules clinic or view a video copy.
Fees and Dues:
Be prepared to pay registration fees to the WSOA and your local association. These fees cover the cost of essential resources like the NFHS Rule Book, Case Book, and Officials Manual.
