Become an Umpire in Iowa

To become a baseball umpire in Iowa, you must follow specific steps to get started. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know:

Register:

The first step in becoming an umpire in Iowa is registering and meeting the requirements with the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA)

Age Requirements:

Anyone of high school age and above may apply for an Iowa official license. The highest level a high school student can umpire is games at the 7th and 8th-grade level.

Other Requirements:

If you want to work varsity games, umpires must attend an IHSAA-sponsored rules clinic during their first three years of umpiring. Umpires must attend at least one clinic every three years to be eligible for the postseason.

Take the Online Exam:

You must pass an online exam yearly as part of your renewal process and view the online rules meeting.

Fees and Dues:

Be prepared to pay registration fees to your local association and the IHSAA. These fees cover the cost of essential resources like the NFHS Rule Books and Case Book and all the necessary information to prepare you for the online exam.
