Become an Umpire in Idaho

To become a baseball umpire in Idaho, you must follow specific steps to get started. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know:

Registration:

All umpires must be registered with the Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA). To start the online registration process through DragonFly on the IHSAA website

Age Requirements:

Generally, the minimum age requirement to become a sports official in Idaho is 18. However, there is an exception: High school seniors can umpire sub-varsity softball games.

Exams and Training:

All officials must attend a yearly rules clinic organized by the IHSAA, which covers rule changes, interpretations, points of emphasis, and other relevant topics.

All new officials must take a test through the NFHS website, an open book.

Sub-varsity officials must score at least 70%, while varsity officials need a minimum of 80% on the NFHS exam.

Varsity officials also have additional requirements, such as attending local board meetings.

Fees and Dues:

Expect to pay registration fees to your local association and the IHSAA, which cover essential resources like rule books and the information needed to prepare for the online exam. These fees support the administration and resources necessary for officiating.
